Sociology of Planning and Architecture

Spatial analysis as societal analysis

The specialist area of Sociology of Planning and Architecture focuses on researching the structures of designed and constructed space and built environment, and impacts on communicative actions. These analyses are compared and related to studies on informal developments of urban space, with the aim to better understand cities, city districts, regions and agglomerations against the background of planning decisions, socio-aesthetic architectural interventions, cities’ intrinsic logics and processes of social appropriation. Faced with the ongoing challenge of advancing theories and methodologies relating to the social construction of spaces, the research area combines applied basic research and knowledge transfer in academic teaching settings on the one hand with practical advice for urban development projects, social-science monitoring and accompanying research, as well as with effective participation in urban development and architectural assessment procedures, and international architecture exhibitions.
